Star Battle Puzzle Rules and Online Practice

Star Battle is a grid logic puzzle about placing stars under four simple constraints: every row needs a star, every column needs a star, every outlined or colored region needs a star, and stars cannot touch one another, even diagonally.

Daily Logic Lab uses a compact 7x7 one-star version. Each generated board is checked by a solver before it is shown, so the daily puzzle and practice boards are designed to have exactly one solution.

Star Battle Rules

• Place exactly one star in each row.
• Place exactly one star in each column.
• Place exactly one star in each color region.
• Stars may not touch horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
• Every shown board should be solvable by logic, not guessing.

How to Play

1. Scan the rows, columns, and regions for groups with very few possible star cells.
2. Mark cells that cannot hold a star because they touch another star or belong to a solved group.
3. Place a star when a row, column, or region has exactly one legal cell left.
4. After placing a star, remove all cells touching it and the rest of its row, column, and region.
5. Repeat until every row, column, and region has its star.

What Makes Star Battle Different?

Beginner Strategy

Start with the smallest or most constrained color regions. If a region has only one square that can still hold a star, that square is forced. Once a star is placed, it eliminates its row, column, region, and all touching squares.

When a move is not obvious, count legal cells. Empty cells are not automatically legal. A cell is illegal if a star already exists in its row, column, or region, or if it touches a star. This simple distinction solves many beginner mistakes.

Worked Example

Imagine a region has three empty cells. One touches a star, so it is illegal. One is in a row that already has a star, so it is illegal too. The third cell is the only legal position left, so the region forces a star there.

After placing that star, mark all eight neighboring squares as impossible. Then mark the rest of the row, column, and region. Those eliminations often create another forced move in a nearby group.
